Faculty of Education Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hub

Our Continuing Professional Development (CPD) course is designed to support teachers who trained within the primary phase but who now wish to explore opportunities for teaching/working within the secondary (11-16) age phase.

Whilst QTS is not phase nor subject specific, this session aims to address some of the key areas within teaching and learning which differ between the two age phases.

This online session will take place on 8 July 2024, 4pm – 6pm. Cost: £37.

This will include:
• safeguarding and pastoral support in the Secondary phase
• managing the behaviour of secondary aged pupils
• structures and assessment principles at KS3 and KS4
• learning with Secondary aged pupils
• inclusion and special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in the Secondary phase

The one-off session is intended to support those at all stages of this transition from those who are considering the transition between phases to those who may be actively applying for roles within secondary settings and who feel they would benefit from some development in key areas related to the phase.

This level 5 qualification is for class teachers, HLTAs and TAs in Edge Hill Partner schools. It is recognised by afPE and Sports Leaders UK with the aim of the course to improve the overall delivery of the physical education curriculum within partner primary schools.

Outcomes:
– Guaranteed to increase delegates’ confidence, competence and PE subject knowledge
– Proven to raise standards across the curriculum and contribute to whole school improvement
– Effective and sustainable use of the Primary PE and Sport Premium

Course aims
– The qualification teaches delegates how to understand the requirements of the primary school physical education curriculum, the links between the principles of pedagogy and child development and how using a range of activities can impact on ‘good or better’ teaching and learning within primary school physical education.

– Delegates will also learn how to develop plans for units of work that cover the primary school physical education curriculum and that use assessment to impact on learning and progress. Delegates will deliver, teach, evaluate and review the plans for units of work and will learn how to use the outcomes of the unit of work to inform future planning.

– Delegates will learn how to lead sustainable development within primary school physical education. This includes understanding the roles and responsibilities of a physical education subject lead.

– Delegates will receive a certificate once they have passed the course.

FREE CPD for primary computing leads and teachers

Calling all primary computing leads and teachers

Free places and funding are available for the following CPD, aimed at helping computing subject leaders prepare for next academic year. These course are provided by STEM Learning and will be delivered by Gavin Davenport, Lecturer in Primary and Childhood Education (computing), Edge Hill University. Both courses will be delivered face-to-face at Edge Hill University, Ormskirk campus.

Introduction to primary computing

For primary computing teachers who are new to the subject or its leadership. This CPD covers the whole computing curriculum at an introductory level, looking at computer science, programming, information technology and digital literacy.

Leading primary computing – module 1

This course will help new primary computing leaders to clarify their role and develop and implement a broad and balanced curriculum. You will learn how best to lead the improvement of computing teaching and learning, and to ensure assessment and monitoring is consistent across your school. Identifying where your school is now in computing will enable you to identify and plan for improvement in your school. Building on this knowledge, you will develop a detailed action plan to guide the effective use and development of resources, assessment approaches and you will enable yourself and school leadership to accurately understand the strengths of computing in your school, and sustainably plan for improvement.

A second online module completes this course – invitations will be sent after module 1

Developing policy and practice by investigating children’s understandings of education using collaborative arts based and photo methodologies: The ‘Visualising Opportunities: Inclusion for Children, Education and Society’ (Voices_Ed) Project

Timings: 1 hour or half day slots

Delivered by: Clare Woolhouse, Reader in inclusive education / Virginia Kay, Senior Lecturer in Primary education & lead for the SENCo Award.

CPD theme: Inclusion / SEND

This session explores ways to understand inclusive education as a broad concept, consider how it is operationalised in various examples and enable practitioners to develop plans for developing their own workshops for exploring challenging topics with their pupils. There will also be an opportunity for Q&A. These events can take place online or face to face.

Target audience: School partners, those working in schools or local authority teams.

Learning Outcomes: 1. We will consider the benefits of utilising visual materials to discuss children and young people’s educational experiences. 2. We will discuss the concept and practice of inclusion in relation to real world case study examples produced by children. 3. We will develop ideas to enable attendees to create their own visual resource ‘toolboxes’ for use in their settings.
