During her studies at Edge Hill University, Alix Hart has acted as carer for her nan, who has bipolar disorder and also lives with anxiety and depression, as well as having recently been diagnosed with dementia.
Alix, from Lower Broughton in Salford, channelled her experiences into a moving dissertation piece exploring the challenges she has faced while navigating her nan’s care through the NHS.
“It was a really personal piece to me and an incredibly emotional experience, but I also wanted to make sure that I captured all sides.
“I was thrilled to get positive feedback because I had found it really difficult at times and it meant a lot to me.”

Alix praised Edge Hill staff for their support, particularly Senior Lecturer in Drama, Emma Heron.
“When I was struggling with a lot going on outside University in my last few months, Emma really helped me with logical advice and support.
“I had a support network outside Edge Hill to help me emotionally, but when I really needed that extra academic guidance, the help I got was invaluable.”

Now newly graduated, Alix hopes to work in schools giving children with special educational needs and disabilities access to the arts.
“Drama can be a really useful tool for everyone and a lot of the time, people with learning difficulties aren’t able to easily access the arts.
I’ve had an interest in drama since I was at primary school, and going on to study it at Edge Hill University was a dream come true.
For me, acting has given me the confidence to explore who I am as a person and really changed me.
I’m passionate about passing that experience on to other people.”
