Your mental health is important to us every day of the year. And this Mental Health Awareness Week, we wanted to share our tips and services in place to support you.

The theme of this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week is movement. Movement is so important for your mental health. But if you are feeling low, it can often be the last thing you want to do. Your body and mind are connected. So when you support one, you support the other. By moving more you can help increase your energy levels and reduce stress and anxiety, all while boosting your self-esteem. It’s important to remember that movement doesn’t mean you have to do high intensity workouts. It’s just about moving your body, getting fresh air and taking a moment to destress.

Tips to increase your move goals

We have listed some of our top tips to help you add extra movement to your day.

Fill the ‘waiting’ times

How often do you find yourself stood in front of the kettle or microwave, patiently waiting? It’s times like this that add up. Instead of standing still and waiting, why not try jogging on the spot or doing some star jumps. The time will pass quicker, and you’ll be adding movement to your busy day without noticing.

Set achievable goals

It’s easy to get carried away when setting your goals. But by setting smaller, more achievable goals, it can help to keep yourself motivated. You can push yourself each day to do a little more. It can also be motivating to keep track of your progress. This could be done on your phone, smart watch, or written in a journal. Looking back and seeing how far you have come can help create a much more positive outlook.

Take breaks

Usually breaks are seen as time to sit down and relax. But it’s important to take a break from sitting still too. If you are spending the day studying in Catalyst, remember to take time each hour to stand up, stretch your legs and rest your eyes from focusing.

Find your fun

Moving shouldn’t be a chore. Find something that you enjoy and have fun with. This may be picking up an old hobby or ensuring your time to move is spent with friends. Socialising is known to help improve your mental health and wellbeing. So combining the two activities at once is the perfect way to feel brighter.

Did you know that the Sports Centre has over 40 classes each week which are completely free to book if you have a valid membership. Annual student memberships are available for just £99, making it even easier to try something new. Find out more by visiting the Edge Hill Sport webpages.

Head outdoors

While the sun is shining, it’s a good idea to head outdoors and get some fresh air. An easy swap could be changing a coffee catch up with friends in the Hub to grabbing your coffee and all taking a stroll around campus’ award-winning green spaces. You could explore our rooftop gardens, beach or lakes. As well as walking the 2.5km trim trail which has a number of exercise stations included to help you improve your fitness, completely free of charge.

Make your motivation playlist

We all have songs that make you want move. Why not make a new playlist and get moving. Whether you’re having a dance round your house or enjoying a feel-good walk. Music can always help to lift your mood.

Remember, movement looks different for everyone. All that matters is that it makes you feel good. So don’t compare your goals with others. Be kind to yourself and focus on your mental wellbeing.

Be sure to reward yourself too. You’re taking care of your mind and body and recognising that is a powerful part of the process.
