Overview

This is a core module within the MSc in Surgical Care Practice (SCP) course, which is taught within the second term of the first year of this three year programme. This foundation module will develop your clinical diagnostic capabilities and enhances your ability to synthesise holistic patient presentations/data gathered to inform an evidence-based management plan, within the defined scope of practice and the need to ensure onward referral as appropriate. This module also focuses on the development of the in-depth knowledge, understanding, skills and behaviours required within all phases of surgical care.

Who is this module for?

This module will be valuable to practitioners undertaking the MSc in Surgical Care Practice and who are employed in that role by Surgical Directorates.

What are the key aims of the module?

• To develop clinical diagnostic capabilities and foster the ability to synthesise holistic patient presentations/data gathered to inform an evidenced-based management plan, within the defined scope of practice.
• A focus on the development of the in-depth knowledge, understanding, skills and behaviours required within all phases of surgical care: pre/peri, intra and postoperative care of the surgical patient.

How will I study?

This module is normally studied over two trimesters. The module overall takes 31 weeks.

What will I study?

• Preparation for Master level study.
• Systems based, person-centred approach, focusing on respiratory, cardiovascular, genitourinary (kidneys/ureters/bladder), gastrointestinal and neurological systems in adults.

How will I be assessed?

The academic assessment for the module consists of three elements:

• Two part written examination
• Practical Assessment of Clinical Examination Skills (PACES)
• Clinical case report

All elements of assessments must be passed to achieve an overall pass in the module.

On successful completion you will:

• Demonstrate critical insight of professionalism, autonomy, roles and responsibilities required of the trainee surgical care practitioner.
• Critically apply knowledge and understanding of anatomy and pathophysiology in the assessment of risk and to ensure the safety of patients pre/peri, intra and postoperatively.
• Demonstrate in-depth knowledge and understanding of the structure and function of the human body in health and disease.
• Synthesise gathered information, demonstrating critical clinical reasoning.
• Adopt an ethical person-centred approach across clinical environments
