Commuting to university has lots of benefits. From time to enjoy your favourite podcast, to flexible days, potential study time (if you aren’t driving), and more. We wanted to share our top tips for commuters, so you get the most out of your trips to campus.

EdgeLink bus (EL1)

Remember your UniCard

While Ormskirk is just a 10-minute walk to campus, there may be times when walking isn’t an option. Your UniCard gives you free access to the EdgeLink bus. Meaning you can travel to and from Ormskirk town centre, straight into the heart of campus

Remember to carry your UniCard with you – without showing your card to the driver, you will have to pay for your ride.

Extra support when using the bus

Journey Assistance Cards can be shown to the bus driver, so they know you need extra support when using the bus. This could be helpful if you have limited vision or hearing, difficulty communicating, special educational needs or some extra time finding a seat.

Driving

Be mindful of the environment

If you drive to campus and arrive early, remember to turn your engine off while sat waiting in your car. If you have some spare time, you could head to the library to catch up on some reading, hit up the Sports Centre for a morning gym session or swim, or stop by Creative Edge to grab a free hot drink and muffin at the Commuter Breakfast, available on Tuesdays and Thursdays 8-9am.

Reserve your parking space

To park on campus, you’ll need a parking permit, but spaces can fill up quickly There’s only one way to reserve a parking space on campus and that’s by car sharing. Car sharing is when two or more people share their journey and travel together. So why not get one of your commuting friends to car share with you? You’ll save money on petrol, reduce your mileage and reduce pollution. It’s a win-win.

Cycling

Say goodbye to helmet hair

Don’t let helmet hair put you off cycling to campus. You can access free showers in the Sports Centre and Faculty of Health and Social Care building. Meaning you can arrive at your lecture feeling fresh.

Safely store your bike

Sheffield stands and wall-mounted racks are all available for use free of charge at our Ormskirk campus. So you can safely put your bike away while going about your day. Sign up to join the Bike Users’ Locker Club

Train

A stress-free commute

Travelling by train is a great way to relax, prepare for the day, catch up on study time, or even enjoy your favourite playlist or podcast before arriving on campus. Ormskirk train station is just a short walk from campus, or you can catch the EdgeLink bus along the way.

Discounted travel

If you travel by train, apply for a 16-25 Railcard. You’ll save a third on all UK train fares, making rail an affordable and eco-friendly option. Even if you’re over 25 but a full-time student, you’ll be eligible for these savings too.
