Colours, crest and mace
The University Arms include a Liver bird, Lancashire red roses and symbols of scholarship and community. The motto, In Scientia Opportunitas, translates as ‘In knowledge there is opportunity’.
The University colours of heliotrope, gold and green date back to the origins of the institution and are used in graduation hoods and gowns. The colours are used in various traditions of the women’s suffrage movement and reflect the commitment to the equality of women that drove the formation of the institution.
The University mace, designed by noted maker Clive Burr, is the symbol of institutional authority, used at award ceremonies and major functions.
