Serena Kennedy, Merseyside Police’s first female Chief Constable, will discuss her fascinating career, which spans almost three decades, and offer her insights and advice on the future of policing.
Her lecture A personal journey through policing, and the role of prevention in modern day policing will take place from 2pm-4pm on Wednesday 16 February and is open to all Edge Hill students and staff.
Chief Constable Kennedy, who is originally from Ormskirk, joined Merseyside Police as an Assistant Chief Constable in 2017 before being promoted to Deputy Chief Constable in October 2018.
She was appointed to the force’s top role of Chief Constable in April 2021.
At the time of her appointment, she said: “Merseyside Police is the best performing force in the country, and I am determined that the people of Merseyside continue to have a police service that puts them at the heart of everything it does.
“When I joined the police more than 27 years ago, I never thought that one day I would be a Deputy Chief Constable, let alone a Chief Constable, and I am looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead and working with the fantastic officers and staff who provide a professional, effective and efficient service to the communities of Merseyside on a daily basis.”
Chief Constable Kennedy started her career in neighbourhood policing with Greater Manchester Police, where she worked her way up to the rank of Inspector. In 2008 she was promoted to Detective Chief Inspector with the Major Incident Team, before moving to a new role as Superintendent in charge of partnerships and local policing in 2010.
Two years later she returned to the Serious Crime Division as Detective Superintendent before transferring on promotion to Cheshire Constabulary as Head of Public Protection.
Darren Martland, Senior Lecturer in Policing at Edge Hill, said: “Chief Constable Kennedy has had a fascinating career spanning almost 30 years. In that time, she has witnessed extensive changes to policing in the North West, and most recently made history as the first female Chief Constable of Merseyside Police.
“Policing is changing and continues to dominate public conversation. This lecture will be a unique opportunity for students and staff to hear the first-hand experiences of Merseyside’s top police chief and her views on the future of policing in the country.”
