Internationally acclaimed author and screenwriter Lynda La Plante CBE to be awarded an honorary doctorate from Edge Hill University alongside budding writers graduating on Friday 22 July.
Lynda, who was born in Liverpool and is best known for writing the Prime Suspect TV crime series said: “I am very honoured and grateful to be the recipient of an honorary doctorate from Edge Hill University. I believe studying English and Creative Writing gives such a strong foundation of knowledge, to any student wanting to pursue a career in all aspects of the arts. I look forward to meeting some of the students and hearing their career ambitions during my visit.”
Lynda is joining a community of well-respected authors and scriptwriters awarded honorary doctorates from Edge Hill University including Frank Cottrell-Boyce, Heidi Thomas and Chris Chibnall.
The University has a strong community of authors as part of a Narrative Research Group. The group members are responsible for shortlisting on the Edge Hill Prize, the only annually presented award for a published, single-authored collection of short stories in the UK and Ireland. Our alumni community regularly nurture the talent of Creative Writing students with masterclasses, workshops and skill-sharing sessions.
Multi award-winning writer, Lynda, who will without doubt already have a very impressive trophy cabinet at home illustrating an extremely successful career has received accolades including an Emmy Award for Outstanding Mini Series, a BAFTA for television writing and a CBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for services to literature, drama and to charity, to name only a few.
With a collection of over 40 published best-sellers to her name and committed in her support to a number of charities; the Princes Trust to help disadvantaged young people as well Quick Reads who commission well known authors to write books specifically designed to aid easy reading for adults who are less confident in their writing skills, Lynda is an excellent role model for our creative writing students.
If you haven’t read any of her novels then it’s possible that you’ve seen one of her hit television productions. Lynda, who fast became a house-hold name, set up her own television production company La Plante Productions in 1993, writing for and producing high-rating series The Governor, Supply & Demand and Trial and Retribution for ITV, Killer Net for Channel 4, as well as productions for NBC, CBS, ABC and TNT.
