It’s the end of term. You’re probably feeling proud and ready for summer break. And so you should. But your decision of where to live next may be playing on your mind. If you haven’t sorted your accommodation out for next year yet, don’t worry – you’re not too late. Your Edge Hill Students’ Union is here to help.

Looking for your student home is an exciting time. But we know it can seem like a daunting task. Searching for a private rental hoping to find a hidden gem. With so many options that appear perfect in online photos, but on viewing you find damp or lots of hidden charges.

You might not know who you want to live with yet either. Decided not to commute after all and want to live closer to campus or your friends? You’re not alone. And there are plenty of ways you can find like-minded people who are in the same boat – and make new friends for life. 

What is studentpad?

studentpad is a property portal that is free for the EHU student community. The properties listed are all local to campus and have satisfied the relevant requirements to advertise their properties, such as uploading their current gas safety certificate. studentpad has been designed to take the stress out of your property search and to enable you to make an informed choice.

Browsing housing

Within the portal you can view all advertised housing in the area from registered landlords. You can make your search as specific as you like with filters including:

  • availability
  • bedrooms
  • living arrangement
  • price
  • property type
  • student type (undergraduate or postgraduate)

You can even view your options in a handy map view so you can ensure you are near your favourite places.

Talking to the landlord(s)

Build a relationship with your potential landlords and have the peace of mind that you can ask questions while browsing for your new home.

Be Ready to Rent

The Students’ Union have put together a handy guide: Be Ready to Rent. It covers everything from myth busting to considerations, budgeting, and home checklist. The guide can be downloaded and we recommend reading it before starting your private rental search.

Support along the way

The Students’ Union Advice Team can offer support with several aspects when it comes to privately rented housing. This includes advice on:

  • complaints (Lettings agents and Landlords)
  • contract checking
  • deposit protection
  • evictions
  • finding a replacement tenant
  • harassment
  • reporting disrepair
  • The Tenants Fee’s act
  • tenant’s rights

Getting to campus

With most of the properties listed on studentpad located in Ormskirk town centre, it is still easy to get to campus. If you don’t fancy the walk, remember to make use of our free Edge Link bus service. If you show your Uni Card the trip is free, taking you from Ormskirk bus station right into the heart of campus. So there is no need to worry. Whichever off-campus location you choose, you still have the full university life experience right on your door step.

If you are based at our St James’ campus in Manchester, you have can access advice from The Students’ Union. When deciding on your accommodation, we would recommend booking an advice appointment where you can get independent, professional advice and contract checking free of charge. This can be done online. Key things to remember when searching for accommodation

Don’t rush the process
You don’t need to worry about securing accommodation too early. There is plenty of private rental properties in the local area. Feeling the pressure to pick your next home may result in making the wrong choice.
Don’t settle
If you suspect any problems with a properly, talk to your Students’ Union. The team will be able to advise on what’s best to do, which may mean looking elsewhere. Your perfect home will be waiting, so don’t feel disappointed.
Stick to approved housing
We strongly recommend choosing a property through studentpad. The listings have all been approved by your Students’ Union making it a much safer option.
Keep a record of things
Make sure everything is put into writing. Review a property inventory and check the contents against it. It’s also a good idea to take photos of the place as soon as you move in so you can prove the property’s condition if there are ever any issues.
