Edge Hill School of Law and Criminal Justice students experienced an exciting and unique opportunity to gain an insight into the judiciary* and to hear first-hand about the career journeys of several accomplished judges and legal professionals.
At this distinctive event, students were able to network with special guests – including asking questions about a career in the legal profession, overcoming obstacles and identifying ways to progress into the legal sector. Students learnt about alternative routes into the legal profession whilst developing their networking skills and gaining invaluable career advice. The event was hosted by His Honour Judge Robert Altham and Recorder Ayesha Siddiqi.
“The event was an invaluable learning opportunity for our students, allowing them to gain a unique insight into the judiciary and the different routes into the legal profession. We are extremely grateful for the time that the facilitators dedicated to our students and for the numerous opportunities for work experience our students have now been offered since the event.
It was also wonderful to see two of our former students – Chloe Moran and Andrew Tindall – returning as facilitators, providing our students with excellent career advice and guidance.”

The event atmosphere was fantastic, and it had a real positive impact on students.
“The event was a fantastic experience that was very well organised and structured, as well as being a great insight into what to really expect with a career in law. It was an invaluable experience to network with legal professionals. All of the professionals were incredibly approachable and open, and offered support and guidance.”
Jai Bywater, LLB (Hons) Law
“This was a fantastic experience, it gave me the opportunity to engage with legal experts and gain invaluable insights into their career pathways. I had an extended conversation with Abigail Chapman from His Majesty’s Courts and Tribunal Service which provided a deeper understanding of what the Civil Service has to offer.”
Ciara Rooney, LLB (Hons) Law
“I spoke to some of the barristers at the event as this is the profession I’d love to pursue. Events like these are incredibly valuable because it gives us a unique opportunity to network with highly successful professionals that not everyone gets to experience. I think there’s a common perception of, legal professionals that they’re really intimidating. However, being in a room with all of them and hearing their advice was truly inspiring.”
Rachel Smithies, LLB (Hons) Law
“We were delighted to hold an event at Edge Hill University. We wanted the students to know that many judges and legal professionals have faced obstacles and challenges during their legal careers but they have been able to overcome those challenges and progress. We also wanted to highlight how many judges and legal professionals come from diverse backgrounds. It was a pleasure to meet with the students and to see their enthusiasm for pursuing legal careers.”
