April 10, 2025

The Computer Science Department at Edge Hill has secured a £239,437 Innovate UK grant in partnership with Wirral-based SME Water.

The Knowledge Transfer Partnership aims to address key challenges in the water sector, by enhancing operational efficiency, reducing wastage and optimising network performance to ensure a more resilient water infrastructure.

Computer Science Professor Marcello Trovati, who has been delivering partnerships like this at Edge Hill for six years, will work with Leona Celin, a recent Masters graduate. In her vital new role as data scientist associate, she will work closely with SME Water to design, develop, and implement advanced data-driven solutions that will support the company’s strategic objectives and contribute to broader industry improvements.

Professor Trovati said:

“We are delighted to be collaborating with SME Water and Leona on this exciting project. Our goal is to develop an advanced machine learning model that integrates seamlessly into their existing product line, while also transferring the knowledge and capabilities into the business.

“This will support SME Water in launching a commercially ready, AI-driven solution that meets the evolving needs of the water sector.”

The grant, provided through Innovate UK’s Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) programme, will enable a transformative collaboration that combines the department’s expertise in data management with SME Water’s deep experience in civil engineering.

Raasheed Pakwashi, Technical Director at SME Water, stated:

“At SME Water, our vision is to be a driving force for change in the water industry. This partnership marks a pivotal step towards that goal, enabling us to harness cutting-edge machine learning and AI capabilities to develop tailored solutions for our customers.

“Collaborating with leading academic experts will allow us to address critical sector challenges, accelerate innovation and build the skills needed to drive our commercial strategy forward.”

In addition to the KTP funding, SME Water has participation in the University’s fully funded High Growth Innovation Sprint and Leadership for Growth programmes, both funded by the LCR Combined Authority, which are designed to accelerate growth for innovative businesses.

This new KTP is the latest to be added to Edge Hill University’s growing portfolio, reinforcing the institution’s reputation as one of the North West’s leading hubs for innovation and research. The collaboration not only underscores the commitment of both academia and industry to drive forward sustainable solutions but also highlights the potential for significant advancements within the UK water industry.
