BSc (Hons) Psychology

If you are a keen learner, passionate about the field of psychology and keen to be a part of a much wider picture, Edge Hill is the university for you.
Studying psychology at GCSE and A Level inspired me to study the subject at degree level. I wanted to further my studies at an education provider which had good facilities, an outstanding track record of teaching and an encompassing feel.
At Edge Hill, the staff were attentive and went above and beyond to deliver engaging content. Modules were varied and allowed individuals to create their own path by means of following their own interests. For me, this was choosing topics such as forensic psychology, clinical psychology and psychology in education in my third year. This provided useful insight ahead of applying for the PGCE Primary Education with QTS degree, which was always my intended career route, and allowed me to explore areas I was interested in. My dissertation was linked to forensic psychology.
There were numerous opportunities to enhance my employability across my undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. In my undergraduate degree, we took part in careers workshops, mock interviews and the infamous ‘Dragon’s Den’ where we presented to a panel of professionals. On my PGCE, I was able to gain work experience at a Special Educational Needs provider as well as in mainstream schools. I completed two 12-week placements, one in Key Stage 1 and one in Key Stage 2.
During my studies, I also worked for the Student Recruitment team at Edge Hill as a Student Guide and Ambassador. This was a thoroughly enjoyable role. I showcased Edge Hill and all that it has to offer at a range of events including Open Days. I welcomed visitors to campus, hosted meetings and supported special events. My favourite being a talk hosted by musician Professor Green about working class boys in education. I was also a course representative which involved gathering the thoughts and opinions of my cohort and feeding back to staff.
I graduated equipped with a range of skills and invaluable subject knowledge. Key skills include presenting, problem solving, teamwork and organisation. On top of this, I developed skills in writing academically, having increased resilience and managing my time effectively. I developed essential subject knowledge in areas such as attachment, learning styles, SEN, and mental health.
I currently work as a primary school class teacher. As part of this, I lead Computing from our FS1 Nursery class up to Year 6 and I am also responsible for mentoring current university students completing teacher training.
A typical day in my current role requires delivering an engaging curriculum and teaching around seven lessons a day including maths, history, phonics and art. I ensure that children’s wellbeing is my priority and carefully cater to their needs, including special educational needs. I liaise with colleagues, create content, manage teaching assistants, host staff meetings, assess progress and feedback to parents.
I would like to further my interest in Special Educational Needs. I am also passionate about teacher training and believe in supporting the next generation of teachers
