Undergraduate Biology and Biosciences

Biology and biosciences at Edge Hill prepares you for a range of roles where you can make a real impact. Our graduates are working in diverse roles including Pharmacological Scientist, Development Laboratory Technician or Ecological Consultant.

Benefit from our brand new £17.4m Life Sciences building, home to research laboratory spaces, a microscopy room, nitrogen laboratory, autoclave room and much more.

With academics making discoveries in biomedical science, ecology, plant science, biochemistry and genetics, you’ll be immersed in a rich research environment. When you’re not writing lab reports, we might ask you to produce an animation showing a biological process or curate a museum collection. All of our students enjoy a residential science trip in the first year. You can opt to use our world-class microscopy facilities, undertake a tree climbing course or go on an international field trip (paid for by us). We provide placement opportunities across the globe, including Changquing Normal University (China), Turin University (Italy) and Rider University (USA).

We’re 1st in the North West for students employed in highly skilled occupations 15 months after graduating (Graduate Outcomes Survey 2024 – Biology).

Our BSc (Hons) Biology degree is accredited by the Royal Society of Biology, and graduates become associate members.

2nd in the North West overall (Guardian University Guide - Biology and Biomedical Science 2025)

With a range of practical experiences and all field trips paid for by us, it's easy to see why we're 3rd in the North West for Student Satisfaction (Complete University Guide 2025 - Biomedical Sciences).

There have been multiple opportunities for me to travel and study abroad. This is through both field trips, where we gained experience of common data collection techniques, as well as with study abroad, where I was able to study in Mexico for the summer.
