If you are interested in pursuing a career where you can combine a passion for sport, physical activity and exercise with a commitment to promoting health through science then this degree could be for you. Discover an applied understanding of sport, health and exercise sciences. You will gain hands-on experience in real world settings. What you'll study

In Year 1 you will be introduced to the key scientific principles which underpin the interdisciplinary study of sport, physical activity, exercise and health promotion. You will also develop an understanding of the fundamentals of the psychological, sociological, physiological, and biomechanical approaches to the study of health.

In Year 2 you will develop an applied understanding of scientific approaches to health promotion and behaviour change, and how sport, physical activity and exercise can be used to prevent, treat and manage various health conditions.

In Year 3 you will learn how to design, deliver and evaluate health-based programmes which use sport, physical activity and exercise to promote in various settings, including community and professional sports organisations, schools, and primary and secondary care. You will also gain valuable experience of using technology and data analytics to promote health and wellbeing.

How you'll study

The degree takes a hands-on approach, with practical experience in our purpose-built and well-equipped biomechanics, physiology and psychology laboratories. You will also have lectures, small group seminars, tutorials, workshops, taught practical sessions and ICT based learning.

How you'll be assessed

You will be assessed through practical workshops, essays, presentations and lab reports. We use formal written examinations from time to time but they never account for more than 50% of the marks for any module.

Edge Hill University Sport, Health & Exercise Science team are highly experienced and enthusiastic with a real commitment to teaching sport and exercise sciences. Dynamic, friendly and supportive of your individual needs, staff are also actively involved in research and consultancy projects that influence the development of sport and exercise science and which directly feed into your degree.

Timetables for your first week are normally available at the end of August prior to enrolment in September. You can expect to receive your timetable for the rest of the academic year during your first week. Please note that while we make every effort to ensure that timetables are as student-friendly as possible, scheduled teaching can take place on any day of the week. Wednesday afternoons are normally reserved for sports and cultural activities.

Where your course includes optional modules, these are to provide an element of choice within the course curriculum. The availability of optional modules may vary from year to year and will be subject to minimum student numbers being achieved. This means that the availability of specific optional modules cannot be guaranteed. Optional module selection may also be affected by timetabling requirements. Some restrictions on optional module choice or combinations of optional modules may apply.

Entry criteria

Typical offer 104-112 UCAS Tariff points achieved through A Levels, BTEC, International Baccalaureate, Access Diploma, T Level, or Irish Leaving Certificate.
Preferably to include relevant sports and science-related subjects such as physical education, psychology, sociology, and health and social care.

T Level Overall grade of Merit.
International Baccalaureate (IB) We are happy to accept IB qualifications which achieve the required number of UCAS Tariff points.
Access to Higher Education Diploma 45 credits at Level 3, for example 9 credits at Distinction and 36 credits at Merit or 15 credits at Distinction and 30 credits at Merit. The required total can be attained from various credit combinations.

Please note, the above examples may differ from actual offers made. A combination of A Level and BTEC awards may also be accepted.

If you have a minimum of two A Levels (or equivalent), there is no maximum number of qualifications that we will accept UCAS points from. This includes additional qualifications such as Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), AS Levels that haven't been continued to A Level, and General Studies AS or A Level awards.

English language requirements

International students require IELTS 6.0, with a score no lower than 5.5 in each individual component, or an equivalent English language qualification.

If your current level of English is half a band, one band, or one-and-a-half bands lower, either overall or in one or two elements, you may want to consider our Pre-Sessional English course.

Fair Entry Criteria

Our new Fair Entry Criteria is a Contextual Admissions Policy that takes an applicant’s personal and educational background into account. Facilities

Based in the Wilson Centre, the Department of Sport and Physical Activity places a strong emphasis on practical work underpinned by outstanding facilities. There are dedicated laboratories in performance analysis, biomechanics, physiology, psychology, musculoskeletal, biochemistry, vision analysis, sleep, exercise and performance, and functional rehabilitation, as well as a sports therapy clinic.Wilson Centre

Extensive use is also made of the on-campus leisure facilities which include top-of-the-range 3G football and rugby pitches, hockey pitches, tennis courts, competition-standard athletics track and an athletics field. Our sports centre boasts a 25-metre swimming pool, double sports hall for badminton, basketball, netball and squash, a 100-station fitness suite, aerobics studio and a health suite with sauna and steam rooms.

The University may administer a small inflationary rise in tuition fees, in line with Government policy, in subsequent academic years as you progress through the course.

EU/EEA and Swiss students who have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, as well as Irish nationals, may be eligible for the UK tuition fee rate.

Financial support

Subject to eligibility, UK students joining this course can apply for a Tuition Fee Loan from the Government to cover the full cost of tuition fees. UK students enrolling on the course may also be eligible to apply for additional funding to help with living costs.

Your future career

This degree will prepare you for a wide range of careers in sport, physical activity and exercise, as well as the health and care sectors. These include roles in physical and mental health promotion, whether in communities and schools, or professional sports settings.

The course will also prepare you for work in primary and secondary care settings, including through physical activity and exercise promotion as part of multi-disciplinary teams alongside other health professionals.

Our students also have the opportunity to continue onto postgraduate study. And many train to become teachers with a PGCE in primary, secondary in physical education, or within further education.
