The human body is often pushed to its limits in pursuit of sporting excellence. Unfortunately, injury can be a unwanted consequence of this. You’ll learn how to keep athletes in top condition and how to help injured athletes through rehabilitation, by planning and implementing a comprehensive programme. Imagine the feeling when you help someone return to peak fitness and competitive sport.

The Department of Sport and Physical Activity has excellent multipurpose facilities, including specialist laboratories, dedicated sports therapy clinical areas and bespoke rehabilitation and musculoskeletal suites. We also have football, rugby and hockey pitches, tennis courts, athletics track and field, a swimming pool and a fitness suite. All of which you’ll use as part of your study on our sports therapy degree.

What you'll study
In your first year, we’ll introduce you to the key skills and knowledge required to become a successful sport therapist. You’ll develop fundamental knowledge and skills in areas such as anatomy and physiology, kinesiology, exercise therapy and injury assessment and treatment. This will all be a useful grounding for the next two years of your degree.
In Year 2 you’ll continue to build on your sports therapy skills. You’ll learn more about the underpinning scientific principles in sports therapy in applied modules such as kinesiology and anatomy and physiology. We’ll also give you the chance to develop your practitioner skills through the sports therapy clinical practice module, when you’ll work with clients in our on-campus sports therapy clinic.
Your final year gives you the opportunity to develop as an autonomous practitioner. You’ll put everything you’ve learnt into practice as you develop sports therapy treatment plans and rehabilitation programmes. We’ll help you build on your understanding of treatment methods and apply your knowledge practically in a clinical work placement. You’ll also complete a dissertation on an area of sports therapy of your choice.
How you'll study
The degree takes a hands-on approach, with practical experience gained in our purpose-built and well-equipped biomechanics, physiology and psychology laboratories and sports therapy clinical areas. You will also have lectures, small group seminars, tutorials, workshops, taught practical sessions and ICT-based learning. For each module you will have a detailed booklet that tells you what sessions are about, what to read and how you will be assessed, as well as offering coursework guidance.
Students will gain extensive clinical practice experience throughout the programme within our on-site sports therapy clinic in the first two years and within a professional/semi-professional club in the final year of the degree.
How you'll be assessed
You will be assessed using practical examinations, clinical portfolios, essays, critical analysis of papers, oral presentations, case studies and independent research.
Who will be teaching you
The teaching team are highly experienced and enthusiastic with a real commitment to teaching and supporting students. Dynamic, friendly and supportive of individual student’s needs, staff are also actively involved in research and consultancy projects that influence the development of sport therapy and which directly feed into your degree.

Typical offer 128 UCAS Tariff points, preferably to include Physical Education or a Science subject.
This course is approved by the Society of Sports Therapists. When offers of places are made, consideration will be taken of the Standards of Practice and Proficiency of the Society with regards to your personal fitness and capability to practice.
If you accept a formal offer from Edge Hill University you will be required to apply for a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Enhanced Disclosure indicating that you meet the mandatory criteria of ‘Clearance to Work with Children and/or Vulnerable Adults’. Further information will be sent to you after you have firmly accepted an offer.

If you have a minimum of two A Levels (or equivalent), there is no maximum number of qualifications that we will accept UCAS points from. This includes additional qualifications such as Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), AS Levels that haven't been continued to A Level, and General Studies AS or A Level awards.
English language requirements
International students require IELTS 6.0, with a score no lower than 5.5 in each individual component, or an equivalent English language qualification.
If your current level of English is half a band, one band, or one-and-a-half bands lower, either overall or in one or two elements, you may want to consider our Pre-Sessional English course.

Facilities
Based in the Wilson Centre, the Department of Sport and Physical Activity places a strong emphasis on practical work underpinned by outstanding facilities. There are dedicated laboratories in performance analysis, biomechanics, physiology, psychology, musculoskeletal, biochemistry, vision analysis, sleep, exercise and performance, and functional rehabilitation, as well as a sports therapy clinic.
Extensive use is also made of the on-campus leisure facilities which include top-of-the-range 3G football and rugby pitches, hockey pitches, tennis courts, competition-standard athletics track and an athletics field. Our sports centre boasts a 25-metre swimming pool, double sports hall for badminton, basketball, netball and squash, a 100-station fitness suite, aerobics studio and a health suite with sauna and steam rooms.

Learning resources
There is a dedicated sports therapy clinic, providing a clinical learning environment in which you will gain practical experience with your peers and external clients. Cutting edge musculoskeletal assessment tools combine with a dedicated strength and conditioning area in our MSk laboratory, while a rehabilitation centre enables bespoke rehabilitation programmes to be implemented for individuals or small groups.

Financial support
Subject to eligibility, UK students joining this course can apply for a Tuition Fee Loan from the Government to cover the full cost of tuition fees. UK students enrolling on the course may also be eligible to apply for additional funding to help with living costs.

By the time you finish your degree, you’ll have specific skills and knowledge directly related to sports therapy. You’ll also have a range of transferable skills that will equip you for a graduate role or further study.
Our graduates go on to have exciting careers in sports therapy, whether they are self-employed or working within a club, clinic or educational setting. Some go into related fields such as wellness and health, chiropractic or physiotherapy. Here are just some of their job roles:

Other students continue on to postgraduate study, such as our MSc Sport, Physical Activity and Mental Health. Or they train to become teachers with a PGCE in primary, secondary in physical education, or within further education, for example.
